Most babies are around three months old when they start daycare for the first time. At this age, they adapt easily, to us and to the new environment. However, if your child is a bit older, they might find it harder to adjust. Children under the age of two don’t fully understand that you’ll really come back at the end of the day. A goodbye ritual can provide your child with a sense of security as they transition from home to daycare (or to a grandparent, neighbour, etc.).
A predictable goodbye
Try to do everything in the same order each time. Put your child's belongings in their tray, play for a bit, give a hug, and say goodbye. Because predictability, with the same sequence of actions each time, provides reassurance. Also, try not to prolong the goodbye. It only makes it harder for your child to let go. Usually, they’ll adjust quickly. If saying goodbye continues to be difficult, we’ll gladly help you to find a routine that suits your child.
Confidently
Young children are very sensitive to emotions. If you’re tense during the goodbye, your child will likely pick up on that. So, try to relax (even if you’re in a hurry) and trust the knowledge and experience of the daycare staff. Based on everything you’ve shared with us, we quickly learn what your child needs. A hug, sitting on our lap, or a distraction? While you might still be thinking about their tears, your child is often already distracted. If you're concerned, feel free to call us to check in. We’re also happy to send you an update through the Parent App if that helps to put your mind at ease.
