At day care, your child can treat their friends, but it's not mandatory. In after-school care (bso), children do not bring treats themselves as they often already treat at school. However, we still love to make your child feel special. We might sing or dance together or prepare a healthy and festive snack.
What does celebrating a birthday at day care look like?
As your child's birthday approaches, you can indicate through the parent app or directly with the group whether your child wants to treat. Together, we will pick a convenient date. We will decorate the group room for a festive atmosphere. Of course, a birthday hat is a must! Sometimes, we even have a special birthday chair or a wooden birthday cake.
On the day itself
At the toddler group, we often start the day in a circle, a lovely moment to sing for the birthday child. Treats are usually shared a bit later, depending on what your child has chosen to treat with. Throughout the day, we make sure your child feels special.
Nerves
Not all children enjoy being in the spotlight. We take that into account, of course. It should still be a celebration. Singing a different song or playing with instruments can be just as much fun.
Prefer not to treat?
Treating is not obligatory! We can find other ways to have fun together on the group. This saves you from (financial) stress.
Still want to treat? Do's & don'ts
We advise choosing a healthy treat (from the Dutch Nutrition Center's five-slice pie chart (Schijf van Vijf)). If your child prefers something less healthy, the children can take the treat home with them at the end of the day. Their parents can then decide whether to give it to them or not.
Also important: the treat should not contain small pieces or parts that children could choke on. Grapes on a fruit skewer may look nice, but due to their smooth, round shape, they can be dangerous for young children.
Sustainability
Some parents prefer treats that can also be played with. That is fine, as long as it is safe. Sustainability is also appreciated! So, opt for a cardboard book, sidewalk chalk or clay rather than a plastic toy.
