What determines the cost of childcare?
The price of childcare depends on factors such as:
- The location
- The number of days or half-days per week
- The type of childcare: daycare, preschool, after school care, lunchtime care or before-school care
- The chosen childcare package
- Extras, such as hot meals or extended childcare
- Your assessed income (this determines the childcare allowance)
The costs per type of childcare vary. A day at a daycare center costs on average more than a half-day at an after school care center. Preschool is usually only in the mornings and is sometimes partially subsidized.
Average hourly childcare costs (gross) at Partou
- Daycare: Daycare hourly rates range from €9.83 to €11.83. The average hourly rate is €10.46.
- After school care: The hourly rates for after school care range from €8.45 to €11.04. The average hourly rate is €10.20.
Costs of preschool: how does it work?
In some cases, parents can receive municipal subsidies for preschool. These subsidies vary per municipality and depend on your situation. Check the location page of your preferred location for rates and subsidy options.

Childcare allowance: how it works
The government helps parents with a contribution towards the costs: the childcare allowance. The amount of the allowance depends on:
- Your (combined) income
- Number of children in childcare
- Number of childcare hours
- The hourly rate for childcare
Please note: if your income or childcare situation changes, notify the Tax and Customs Administration as soon as possible. This will prevent you from receiving too much or too little allowance.
What is your reference income?
Your reference income is your (combined) gross annual income. You can find a calculation tool for calculating your reference income on the Tax and Customs Administration website. You will also need this to use our calculation tool.
Tips for saving money
- See if you can be flexible with childcare days or location.
- Apply for childcare allowance on time and notify the Tax and Customs Administration of any changes. This will prevent any surprises later on.
- Ask your employer if there is an arrangement in place, such as a contribution via your gross-net salary or collective agreements. Some employers—such as large companies, hospitals, or government institutions—offer a contribution toward childcare costs. It's definitely worth asking!
Childcare will not (yet) be free
The government wants to make childcare almost free in the future. However, the implementation of this plan has been postponed until at least 2027. Until then, parents will still have to pay part of the costs themselves. How much you pay depends on your income and the type of childcare you use.
